Preferred items
Boots of Speed --> Waterwalk Boots
Runefang --> Katana --> Windblade --> Frostmourne
Armour of Endurance --> (Spellshatter Armour) --> Moonglade Armour
Belt of Giant Strength / Amber Ring --> Medallion of Courage --> Dawnstone / Amulet of Power
Start of with buying 2 extra Mercenary Contracts (That's 3 in total) which allow you to creep all the way to like level 8 or 9 before you run out of footmen.
This means you can pick you poison arrow as primary spell and attribute bonus or magic resistance second- and thirdly instead of using the multiple shot spell which is rather effective for creeping but in this case it's not really needed because of the extra mercenaries.
What I do most of the time, is getting the Boots of Speed early on with Runefang and Armour of Endurance.
Why so?
Well.. In my opinion the Ranger is one of the best heroes for creepjacking enemy heroes - if not THE best..!
The Boots of Speed are not for hunting heroes, but for escaping the allies of the hunted one... Begin creepjacking other team at level 7 with level 4 poison arrow - bring an extra venom spear, just in case ^^ That double poisioning should give you enough time to kill an injured hero early game - even without the Finishing Shot.
Runefang gives you those very important extra damage while they're trying to run from you with a poison arrow up their ass.
Armour of Endurance. In my opinion one of the best items in the game since that +5 armour for around 600 gold early game gives you a boost which can save your neck in mass battle/ritual game or when fighting 1on1.
Strength or Agility boost? (Belt of Giant Strength vs. Amber Ring)
That depends on whether you got 3 melee heroes to stand in front of you when duelling the other team over Ritual i.g. or if your team is mainly casters and ranged heroes where you're more likely to get targetted fast.
Another question is whether you're nearly getting yourself killed all the time which makes the BGS the obvious purchase, whereas if the enemies just escape you with about 50hp all the time then go for the Amber Ring.
Elven Ranger - Mid Game
Okay we've now had 1-3 Ritual games which brings wood into consideration when buying items.
I would probably go for Katana (unless enough wood to go directly for Windblade) and the Medallion of Courage which gives your Ranger the two most needed boots - Strength and Agility (+4 both)
If you get nuked often by enemy team go for the Spellshatter Armour which combined with your passive magic resistance should allow you to get out of range in time to save your neck (use the poison arrow on them, if they try to hunt you down)
Elven Ranger - Late Game
Okay. Now it's time to kick some serious ass.
I mentioned Waterwalk Boots, Frostmourne, Moonglade Armour and Dawnstone/Amulet of Power as my optimal items for the Ranger.
Why so?
Waterwalk Boots for the same reason as Boots of Speed in early game - to escape from big nasty melee strength based heroes.
furthermore it gives you the extra movement speed that you lose by switching from Windblade to Frostmourne.
Frostmourne. Combined frost attack with poison arrow? If you can't figure why that's effective don't play the Ranger
Moonglade Armour. Again I've chosen an item which boosts your movement speed and your armour slightly. If the Spellshatter Armour is needed keep that instead. But if you still run around with the Armour of Endurance, switch that into the Moonglade
Armour (Might toss in a Armour Upgrade (+3 armour) on it)
Dawnstone or Amulet of Power?
Well to be honest I only buy the Amulet of Power when I wanna go for some nasty hero killing - combined with your Finishing Shot and poison arrow you should be able to take down even a well-boosted strength hero.
You can't use Amulet of Power for Argonax though, so therefore I tend to go for Dawnstone (Maybe with Health Boost or Angels Vision (True Sight) Upgrade depending on what's needed)
That's it I guess, so far I haven't played a game where I've had ALL of these items at the same time since it's a lot of gold/wood in total but hey, it's just theory. Now go make it happend!
